I am honoured to be the 41st consecutive president of the Business and Professional Women (BPW) Barrie. Being President is a responsibility that I do not take lightly. I am keenly aware that I follow in the footsteps of 40 awe-inspiring Presidents over the past 70 years, and countless more members who have had significant influence on this club, our community, the province, the country…perhaps even the world.
It truly is inspiring to see how far women have come in the past 70 years; however, there is still much to do. The gender wage gap still exists in Canada. Women are still under-represented in top management, in politics, and on boards. Sexual harassment, discrimination and violence still rear their ugly heads far too often in our society.
However, it is not all doom and gloom. We have a feminist Prime Minister who appointed the first gender balanced federal cabinet in Canadian history. We have Ontario’s first female Premier who is shaking up the boys club, and we have an enlightened Mayor in Barrie who has been very supportive of our efforts. Things are looking up, and BPW is here to move things in the right direction!
My theme for 2016-2018 is: “Empowering Women in Barrie and Beyond”, with focus on three primary areas:
3) Member Engagement & Satisfaction
If you are a woman in the Barrie area who is interested in the goals above, then why not join us? We meet the third Tuesday evening of each month at the Barrie Country Club, beginning at 5:30, with a delicious 3-course dinner served at 6:00, followed (usually) by a guest speaker at 7:00, and our business meeting at 7:45. Meeting cost is $35 for members, or $40 for guests.
There is also an annual membership fee that is shared with BPW Ontario, BPW Canada, and BPW International.
BPW Barrie members are a dynamic group of women representing many professions, industries, and experiences, working together for working women! Join us today!
